Matt McGraw- Fly Fishing Pristine Mill Creek in West Virginia
This post walks you through Matt's experience in the Kumbabrow State Forest of West Virginia, as he fishes Mill Creek.
Many of us view fly fishing as a time-honored tradition that allows anglers to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature while pursuing elusive trout. Nestled within the picturesque Appalachian Mountains, Kumbabrow State Forest offers a unique fly fishing experience that the brook trout aficionados among us love.
To the fly angler, Mill Creek is a hidden gem, tucked away within the rolling hills and hollers of of Kumbabrow State Forest. The creek meanders through a pristine forested landscape, offering a deep sense of seclusion and serenity. Known for its crystal-clear waters and thriving trout population, Mill Creek provides an ideal habitat for both novice and seasoned anglers.
Understanding the geology, flora, and fauna of a fishing destination is essential for discerning anglers. Mill Creek flows through a diverse geological terrain, characterized by ancient sedimentary rocks, limestone outcroppings, and gentle shale banks. These geological features contribute to the creek's unique water quality, supporting a healthy ecosystem and creating prime conditions for trout to thrive. Kumbabrow boasts a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, enhancing the allure of fly fishing in the area. Towering hemlocks, vibrant rhododendrons, and majestic oaks line the banks of Mill Creek, providing shade and creating an idyllic setting for anglers to cast their lines.
One of the most exciting conservation efforts in Kumbabrow State Forest is the brook trout restoration project, a project of the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture. Native brook trout, a cherished species once abundant in the Appalachian region, have suffered from habitat degradation and competition from non-native trout species. To address this issue, dedicated conservationists have initiated a comprehensive restoration program to bring back the brook trout populations to their former glory. The project involves habitat improvement initiatives, such as stream bank stabilization, riparian vegetation restoration, and the removal of barriers to fish migration. Additionally, local organizations collaborate with state agencies to implement responsible fishing practices, including catch-and-release regulations, to ensure the long-term sustainability of the trout populations.
While the primary focus of any fly fishing expedition is the thrill of hooking hard fighting speck. Kumbabrow State Forest offers a range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails wind through the forest, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the Appalachian landscape. Camping facilities provide an opportunity to spend the night under a canopy of stars, creating unforgettable memories in this wilderness haven.

Matt McGraw is a proud Appalachian who lives in the scenic Alleghany Highlands of Virginia. He is a marginal but enthusiastic fly angler, a sub-par fly tyer, and a dangerous fly caster. His favorite streams include the Jackson River, the South Fork of the Holston River, and the New River. His preferred quarries are trout and smallmouth bass, but he will target with a fly rod anything that both swims and eats. As a tyer, Matt likes old-school trout flies and easy-to-tie bass flies. Matt's alter-ego is that of a mild-mannered college administrator at Mountain Gateway Community College.
